Hi Doug, I think the following information is for the McAndrew family you are researching, however, you will have to do some more research to prove some of the information. There was only one McAndrew family from Scotland in Clayton Co. on the early census records. On the 1860 census, they lived close to the Whitney family. Most of the McAndrew family seems to have moved to Cherokee Co. in the 1870s. A couple of Mary Whitney's brothers (Peter & William) later moved to Nebraska. Mary (McAndrew) Whitney and her mother Mary Gilchrist (surname at death), both died after Iowa started registering deaths in the state. Hopefully, the names of their parents are shown on their death registrations. If so, this would cover off a couple of generations. Hope this helps a bit. Landing in this country, they came West and selected land in Monona Township. The Clydesdale Colony, as it was known, was composed of James Freebairn and family, John McAndrew and family, James Love, John Jack and family, John Davy, Robert St. Clair and family, David Drummond and family, Andrew Anderson and family, John Campbell and family, John McHuffy, John Craig and family, and Alex, McKinsley. James Freebairn was President of the colony. Among those now living are David Drummond and Andrew Anderson. The rest have passed away, but among their descendants are found some of the best citizens of Clayton County. I'm fairly sure the following baptismal record in 1840 is for Mary McAndrew Whitney. There are also a couple of possible entries for her parents, but not as sure of these two. From the LDS Family Search website - information extracted from old parish registers: MARY MCANDREW...Female Birth: 02 JAN 1840, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Father: JOHN MCANDREW Mother: MARY DAVIE Baptismal Record (from Scotland's People site) Glasgow, January 1840: McAndrew: John McAndrew, shoemaker & Mary Davie, a daughter: Mary, b. 2 January 1840. Sponsors: Martin Dorward & Isaac Dorward. Baptism: (from LDS site) JOHN MCANDREW...Male Birth: 16 MAR 1809, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Father: GEORGE MCANDREW Mother: CHRISTIAN MCKENZIE Baptism: (from LDS site) MARY DAVIE...Female Birth: 02 OCT 1814, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Father: PETER DAVIE Mother: ISOBEL GRAHAM The record for Mary McAndrew in 1840, indentifies her father as a shoemaker, and, at least one of her brothers was given the middle name of Davie. I would think the death registration for either Mary or one of her siblings would list the names of their parents. John McAndrew - it is unlikely that you can prove his parentage since he died before death records were kept in Iowa Mary Davie - Mary's death record may list her parents and that is likely the only place to find the information. I couldn't find a marriage record for them in Scotland and marriages before 1855 seldom mention the parents anyway.
