This would appear to be his wife, Ann, staying with their son & daughter-in-law.

Any children born to James & Ann after 1837 should also appear there; and the birth of the last one will help reduce the uncertainty of his Death date.
The 1841 Census might help.

This showed up on the LDS Family Search site, so his marriage to Ann should be available on the same site.
This record may have the names of the couple's respective fathers and other clues, although unfortunately English records are not as fulsome as their Scottish equivalents-

I note another LDS FS Submission suggests he married Ann in 1825 rather than 1840, hence the need to check to the Official Records where available.

This seems to be the 1840 Marriage record-
MclLauchlan James, April-May-June Quarter, 1840, Sunderland 24 258
as there is a similarly-numbered record for Ann Thompson.

Just to confuse the issue, I have spotted an Ann McLauchlan Death in 1837, Sunderland; but this may be a child, bearing in mind the general conditions of that period; and it may be that Elizabeth died around the same time from complications.
Only carreful searching of FMP can really clarify what happened.
