Hi Margaret. The surname McInnes is very popular in Scotland, and as you suggest, derives from the Gaelic 'Mac' meaning son-of. Stands to reason then that, like most surnames, there are many unrelated McInnes families all over Scotland (it would be unrealistic to think that they all descended from the same Innes !). Your point about writing things down phonetically is very valid. Families didn't 'change Mc to Mac to suit the Irish', the name simply got written down as McInnes, MacInnes, McInnis etc, until at one point someone in the family became literate enough to settle on an exact spelling. It's easy to understand how the name McInnes could be misinterpreted as McCance, especially if spoken in a Northern Irish brogue.
