Hi Margaret, The 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade was a light infantry unit with a history running over almost 150 years. Howver it would appear your ancestor saw little "action" until the later 1840's - all active service being far from Scotland: http://www.ian.a.paterson.btinternet.co.uk/orginfantry.htm#2RB “The Nineteenth Century In 1816 the Rifles were taken out of the numbered regiments of the Line and re-titled The Rifle Brigade. They saw no more active service for thirty years, until they fought in South Africa in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 band 1852-53, against the Boers in 1848, in the Crimea, in the Indian Mutiny and colonial campaigns in Ashantee, Afghanistan, Canada, Burma and Sudan, including the Battle of Omdurman.” I might suggest that "Private Soldier" may indicate his rank as a soldier was that of a Private. Good luck in your quest. Regards, LarryR Notify Administrator about this message?
