Wow, I am glad to find ANYBODY with this name in the region I'm seeking.Family lore has it that my Matilda Groppe (b. 1863) was only adopted by Groppe and that she was born a Schwertfeger (various spellings).I recently found "Tillie" on the 1880 US census living in Wheeling WV with her mother Augusta (b. 1840), father John Groppe (b. 1842) (spelled Grappe)--these 3 in the house were born in Hanover.Other children in the family were Louisa b. 1868, Christian b. 1869, Emma b. 1873, John b. 1878.Emigration records show that Matilda emigrated as a child at 6 yrs., naturalized at 7 yrs.And yet I find a marriage record for a John Groppe and Augusta Swagfayer for a time frame when Tillie was only about a year. Can there be another couple with this set of names?!Do you have Schwertfegers in the US and where did they live?My aunt told me that the name was "big" in Wheeling WV.I don't find too many of them, but one or two were very prominent and this may be what she meant.Does anybody know what was going on in Germany at the time that might have made them emigrate?
