John H. Schuler, 75, of Wooster, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at West View Manor, after a long illness.
He was born March 5, 1936, in Baton Rouge, La., to the late Edgar A. and Kathryn (Reinhart) Schuler and married Betty K. Thunhorst on June 6, 1959. She survives.
After graduating from Oberlin College, he taught foreign languages in the Cleveland Public Schools and at Cleveland State University. Graduating from Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 1974, he began a solo law practice in Wooster, later working in partnerships as Leedy & Schuler and Taggart, Cox, Hayes & Schuler. He served as Wayne County Common Pleas Judge from 1983-86, and retired from the practice of law in 1997.
He was a member of Wayne County Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, Tri-County Beekeepers and Ohio State Beekeepers Association. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Wayne County Public Library.
An avid vegetable gardener, he proudly displayed his produce at the Wayne County Fair for a number of years. As an active member of Wayne County Democratic Party, he ran for countywide office, helped other candidates with their campaigns and served as Chester Township precinct committee person for several years.
Along with his wife, he was honored by the Wayne County Democratic Party with the Ruby Bishop Memorial Service Award in 1997 and the Old Hickory Award in 2007. He had a fine voice and sang bass in the choir of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County and with Wayne County Choral Union.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are a son, George Edgar of Beacon, N.Y.; sisters, Virginia (Joel) Schulman of Northampton, Mass., and Kathryn Kirshner of Brookline, Mass.; two nephews and a niece; four great-nephews and a great-niece.
Graveside services will be in Foxfield Preserve Cemetery in Wilmot on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Elaine Strawn officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
For those wishing to attend, the funeral cortege will leave Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Drive, Wooster at 1:15 p.m.
