My great-grandfather Karl (known in US as Henry) immigrated in 1865 from Liegnitz, Silesia-originally in Germ., now part of Poland. He came in a cabin & was listed on the ship's list as a mason. Lived for many years in NYC until moving in mid 1900's to Palisades Park, NJ where he was the first town's sheriff and one of the first councilmen. Had 10 children, but many died in infancy and 2 others in a typhoid epidemic in early 1900's. My grandfather was Hugo Frank Scholz, on various certfs is listed as Conrad Wilhelm or Johann.
Karl married Mary W. Oxel, W I believe for Wilhelmina. However, on the 1885 NYC census her mother is listed as living with them as a "Minnie Exner." Perhaps there was a language problem with the census taker because I can't find any records of her entering, death, etc. Have tried every derivation of Exner and OxelI can think of. Any other info on this family would be appreciated. BTW- Mary is listed on all 10 birth certfs as from Brandenburg, Berlin. there seem to be many Scholzes in Berlin also.
