Frederick, Jacob & Mountjoy; Mont. Co.. MD; 1790s
My ancestor, Catherine, might have been related to these men, but I do not know.I am entering information from a book on "The History of Clarksburg, King's Valley, Purdum, Browningsville and Lewisdale (MD" by Dona L. Cuttler:
"Dowden's Ordinary - was built in 1753.In 1754 Michael Ashford Dowden applied for a permit to operate a public house of entertainment.Frederick Scholl was a subsequent owner (about 1790), and passed the tavern to his son Jacob Scholl. It was he who planted the clippings given to him by a guest and subsequently served Catawba wine here."
"Hammer Hill - The land was patented to Michael A. Dowden, on November 10, 1752.The forty acres are situated on the east end of Clarksburg near Wafford's Branch which flows into the Little Seneca Creek. The property was owned by Jacob Scholl, who propagated Catawba grapes here.Frederick Scholl was operating the tavern by 1800. Jeremiah Orme, a grocer in DC sold wine made from the Catawba grape in the 1820s.According to Scholl's son, Mountjoy, who was born in 1792, the plants were given to his father when Mountjoy was a youngster. The guest gave him two cuttings and the vineyard in Clarksburg resulted.
