Thomas Coggin Scholes was my 3rd Great-Grandfather. He was married to Harriet Cora (Happing) Hopping (born 2/24/1831 in Wainscott, Long Island, NY) (Died 4/27/1885 W. Burlington, Ia). I have learned that Thomas was in the Civil War at the battle of Shiloh but I do not know where he served (what ship!) He was Third Engineer on the Union Ironclad USS Indianola that was sunk by the confederates. He was in Libbyville (perhaps Libby, Va) prison for 4 yrs.

Thomas remarried R.E. Twentyman but I have no info about that marriage.

Thomas' parents were George Scholes born 1801 in Leeds, Yorkshire and Mary Coggin born 1805 in Lincolnshire--they married 8/31/1817 in Nottinghamshire, Saint Mary, Nottingham, England.

Thomas died 9/19/1906 in Dunsmuir, California.

If you have any additional info that I have not listed could you please let me know.

Thanks, I hope some of this helps you.
