My mother was a Shaneyfelt. No one likes my ideas about this. On ships records in the 1700's, the name is listed as Schonfeld. Throughout history, the name has changed many times. Schonfeld, Schoenfeldt, Schoenfeldter, Shenefeld, Shaneyfelt, Shanafelt, Shenifelt, etc.... All I know is that my gggg grandfather, George Michael spelled his last name Schoenfeld. One son spelled his, Shaneyfelt. Another son spelled his Shenifelt. Another fact, my g grandfathers name was Joesph. He died when I was very small. My cousin was talking to an old friend of Joesph's. The old friend told my cousin that he had a secret that Joesph made him promise not to tell. He said he didn't want to cause his family any hardship. He said he was Jewish. They were part of the German reform church. Go to Google search and type in "Schwenkfelders". Read the story titled Chapter 1. These people were in fear of their life. They fled in all directions. Some went toward Russia, some to the Neatherlands, some came to America and some stayed in Germany. They changed their names.
