A descendancy of Otje Schmackers of abt 1535, shows much variation of the spelling. Originally the family was in the shipping trade from the Iberian Pennisula, north along the Atlantic coast, and into the Fresian lands and the Waddenzee and to the river Ems. They sailed a ship called a Schmack. As their family ascended into royality and then in to near obscurity and different trades and areas of the Empire of Hannover, the spelling changed. And when they got to Amerika, the spelling really changed. A few variations are: Schmacker, Schmackers, Smakers, Smakkers, Schmoker,Schumaker, ect.
