We have a John Schmidt who worked the Erie Canal as a boatman - living for awhile in Buffalo. He came to America with his brother Martin from Germany or Prussia (U.S. Archives gave info years ago of a Martin Smith age 19 and Jon Schmidt age 15 who came in together about 1860 - both fought in Civil War, only have Martin's records - Archives said that German passengers changed Schmidt to Smith). John married his brother's wife after Martin died of his Civil War wounds. Martin was married in Buffalo to Catherine Melcher and their first 2 children were born there - Mary Catherine & Peter. Children were all born by midwife so there are no birth records in Buffalo. - & they did not keep any records before 1858 in Buffalo. Hope this helps.
