Hello Brenda and Selma!
Would love to be able to look over your genealogy book.Where were their roots in Germany??
My great-grandmother, Catherine Schmalenberger, emigrated to the U.S. in 1881 by herself. As far as I can determine, she left from Hamburg aboard the ship, Suevia, and arrived in New York on May 9.In "Germans to America" she is listed as 22; but in actuality, she was 16.She came from some village in Prussia.
On her marriage certificate (to John Wetzel), her last name is spelled "Smalberger" and her birthplace "Rheuifetz".I think both could be misspelled. On her death certificate, her father's name is spelled "Smallenberger", John. The name of her mother is not indicated.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Mary
