I am 56 years old. My late grandfather, also named John E. Schlosser was born in Culman AL in 1895. He left a report that he was descended from a Peter Schlosser who came to the US and to the area of Tiffin Ohio in the 1830's and there bought land. I found a deed record in that county for a land purchase by a Peter Slusser who died ( in ohio) the same year my grandfather was born. That Peter Slusser was a Protestant, whereas my grandfather was very Catholic. He was, at birth, apparently in a problematic state, since he was raised, at least in part in an orphanage in Culman. I never heard his mother's name, but his father may have been Frank. My grandfather was briefly a professed brother in a Catholic religious house in Alabama. I have the letter from the bishop of Mobile, AL, confirming that he had been dispensed from his vows and was eligible to marry. He married Grace Ethel Moore (my grandmother) in St. Xavier Church in Cincinnati on September 7, 1915. He was all of 20 years old. He and his bride had lived for a time (in separate lodgings!) in the boardinghouse on Broadway in downtown Cincinnati which stood until only about 12 years ago. Her mother ran the house. He was a clothing cutter. I have been unable to connect the Peter Slusser in Tiffin Ohio to my grandfather, or to explain their differing religions. Due to luck in stumbling upon a local title-searcher/genealogist in the courthouse there, I have visted Peter's grave in Bascom, OH. (Obviously, he was a man of some means.) I also read his obituary in the local library. I have come to a gap in the record. Any help would be welcome. My grandfather had many children including my father (JOHN. E. junior) Robert, Gerald, James, Janet, Ethel,Frank and Patricia, many of whom are still with us, mostly in California. I am not the John E. Schlosser who was a U.S. Consular official in Toronto. No connection of which I'm aware with that gentleman. Any news would be welcome! John E. Schlosser Cincinnati, Ohio Notify Administrator about this message?
