My grandmother says that many, many years ago the Schipani name almost died out and the last remaining Schipani male was a monk.
Under the circumstances, the monastery let him out to sire children and he had 21--20 sons and one daughter.As a result, all Schipani's are assumedly related...
Another tale is that the first son in a family always inherited the father's estate and the second son became a monk or priest.The first son's first son inherited, and the first son's second son became a monk/priest in place of his uncle.My great-grandfather was the second son of the first son and was excommunicated from his family for not entering religious life (or so the story goes)...
