Name changed to Schick circa 1915
My grandfather changed his name to Schick upon arriving in America from Germany early this century.A cousin of his in Argentina had had it changed to Schick (I'm not sure why) so he chose the same name.It was originally Szyja (pronounced Zhee-yah).Actually, Szyja was a German version of a longer Polish last name, which I can't spell, but it sounds like "Zhee-ya-hub-a-ye-vitch," a definite mouthful. And this is where a bunch of New York area Jewish Schicks come from.
