Sheryl -- I realize that this is a big delay in posting a response, but I just found your message this evening.

In case you haven't gotten the answer from some other source in the meantime, here it is:

First cousins have a common grandparent. To illustrate, let's take my ancestor John Lathrop (b. 1645) and his first cousin Mary (Lathrop) French, both of whom were grandchildren of Rev. John Lathrop. Mary's daughter Hannah French (b. 1676), who married John Child, would be a first cousin once removed to the younger John Lathrop.

Hannah (French) Child had a daughter Hannah, born about 1701, who married John Fay. Hannah (Child) Fay would be a first cousin once removed of the younger John Lathrop... and so down to Pres. George H. W. Bush, who would be John Lothrop's first cousin ten times removed.

The "cousin" numbers and "removed" numbers add up to tell you the relationship between individuals at the same generation level. Thus, I (like probably at least a million other people) am an eleventh cousin of Pres. Bush (41), and an eleventh cousin once removed of Pres. Bush 43. My sons are twelfth cousins of the incumbent President.
