I have a great great grandfather Peter Scheidt who came over from Prussia. But he eventually settled in Butler County Ohio after moving around a bit and the immigration date is a bit off. Here is an excerpt from a genealogy my mother gave to me:
From Ronald Tutas’ "Scheidt (or Scheid) Family Geneology:"
Peter Scheidt was born in one of the 19th century Germany states, most probably Prussia.Peter and Catherine Schedit married in Europe and immigrated together to America. It appears that Peter’s actual full name may have been John Peter Scheidt (or possibly even Peter John Scheidt). It should be noted that, in preparing this genealogy, the sole recorded reference to Peter’s first name as John was found in the 1860 baptismal record of his daughter mary, in which his first name is given as John with a middle intial od “P.”Although his first name may have been John, he consistently went by the name of Peter after 1860; all other records discovered so far from during his lifetime show his given name simply as Peter.
Peter was said to have left Europe to avoid conscription into the Prussian army. The ocean voyage of Peter and Catherine to America was lengthy and took several weeks. It was told that Peter contracted typhoid on the ship and lost one eye due to infection during the illness.Peter and Catherine Scheidt arrived in America, possibly around 1856.They settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where their son, Jacob, was born in 1858.Subsequently, the family relocated to Butler County, Ohio. When they first moved to Butler County, the family even may have lived in a log house (which was not uncommon in rural area at that time). The Peter Scheidt family was living in Wayne Township in the Jacksonburg, Ohio area around 1870, but by 1880 they had moved to Trenton in Madison Township. The family residence in Tren
