Origine of the name SCHEID ??

Hi,
I am a native german speaker and my surname
happens to be Scheid.
So this question is not new to me.
But I'm not a genealogist, not a linguist, nor
a historian. If you are, don't take all this
information for granted:
In various german dialects (and Germany seems to
be the origin of the name), the term "Scheid" is
used as abbreviation for "Scheide".
Taken from Cassel's Dictionary (UK):
"Scheide" f. I. boundary, border(line), limit,
divide, parting; 2. case, sheath
(also Bot.) scabbard; 3. (Anat) v*gina.
Having a german tongue, I can say that it primarily
means "divide, parting" (e.g. when referring to a
river), "sheath" (when talking about swords and the
like) - and, well, "v*gina".
(NOTE to the maintainers of this forum: I understand
your desire to have only PC messages in this forum.
But this is a perfect example of what cens*rship can
mean. Think about it.)
I expect most ancient german town names ending on
"scheid" can be explained by the fact that such
towns are (or were) located near a place where a
river is divided into two smaller ones, or where
a lake is split by a spit of land.
And I guess the surname "Scheid" derives from one
such a town - or from several different ones.
Hope this helps.
My best wishes,
especially to all Scheids out there!
