Bonjour Bruno - My Schafft (with a T) family came from the Rheinland-Pfalz area in Germany, right along the French border. As you described, this area was often changing hands between the French and the Germans. The immediate area they were in, however, remained German throughout - their town was Birkenhoerdt - a very little village, northwest of Karlsruhe. This town seemed to not know that France was so close, as it was distinctly German. Just a short distance alway is the French town of Wissenbourg, which very clearly showed its mix of German and French cultures. Many of the shop signs were in German or a mix of German & French. The waitstaff at the restaurant we ate at spoke both languages. It's a lovely area. Sorry I can't help you with your Schaff family Bruno - my Schaffts all came & stayed in New York, but I wanted to thank you for the information you shared. With best wishes, Lauren Notify Administrator about this message?
