Born (nee Schaber) in Germany in the late 18th century, probably changing the spelling of his name to Shaber soon after immigrating to America (Pennsylvania) around 1800. A descendants list, compiled in 1981 by Llhat Ashley McConnell (a 2g grandson), gives his name as Romig, lists 5 sons, 2 daughters and no wife's name. The children are. Jacob Thomas, b. 1818, PA Augustus Laabult, b. 1820, PA William Renatus, b. 1823, PA Auralia Julia, b. 1826, PA John Adam, b. 1829, PA Dianna, b. 1831, PA Benjamin Mikael, b. 1834, OH (my 2g gfather). The family moved to Ft. Smith, AR, arriving in 1846. The entire family shows up in the 1850 census in AR, except for the father and eldest son Jacob. The mother is still alive and her name is Lydia, 60, b. PA. Augustus has married (Frances Burks, b. MO) with three children, Jacob, born 1845 in MO, Lydia, b.1847 in AR, and Franklin, b.1849 in AR. I estimate the family must have spent 2-3 years in MO on the trek south from OH. An 1853 grave marker states 'Lydia, wife of Jacob Shaber'. Several of family members are listed by their middle names (a peculiar German custom) which is why I think Romig might be his middle name. A Jacob Shaber purchased land in AR in 1848, but there is no middle init. so we don't know if it is the father or the son. I can find no trace of this family before 1850. They may have left OH before the 1840 census, but they were in PA for over 30 years. Hellllpp!
