Hi Margaret,
I am the great-great grandson of Jacob Schaar, but even I know very little about this branch of the family. According to the papers I have, Jacob Schaar was born on Nov. 9, 1831 in Winzeln, Pfalz, Bayern; and died 19 March 1905.

Jacob Schaar was the son of:

George Michael Schaar
Born: 12 Dec. 1802 in Winzeln, Pfalz, Bayern
Married: 17 June 1828 in Pirmasens, Pfalz, Bayern
Died: 5 June 1867 in Washington Co. Minnestota.

-and-

Elisabetha Nord
Born: 6 Nov. 1803 in Winzeln, Pfalz, Bayern
Married: 17 June 1828 in Pirmasens, Pfalz, Bayern
Died: 18 Nov. 1833 in Winzeln, Pfalz, Bayern

That is as far back as I know. However, when I was in Norway some years ago I met an Austrian man who informed me that Schaar is not a German name at all, but Tyrolean.

To confirm this, my grandfather Raymond Schaar always told us that the name Schaar means 'sheep-shears'. In German sheep-shears is 'scheren'. However, in the Tyrolean-Austrian dialect Schaar does indeed mean sheep-shears.

I hope this helps a little, please let me know if you find anything of interest!

All the best,

Christopher R. Knutson
