Hello Sheila,

Your Thomas Schaan was a first cousin to my great-great-grandfather, Andreas. Their fathers were Peter (b. 1831, Germany) and Andreas (b. 1822, Germany) respectively. These were sons of Nicholas Schaan, b. 1789 in Germany. I have ancestors for Nicholas back to the 1600's.

The Schaan brothers (Peter and Andreas) went to Elsass, Russia,( near Odessa, in the Kutschugan region), as young adults, as their children were born there. Andreas' son, Andreas (my great-great-grandfather) died there, and his children and widow came to North Dakota. Two of them later came to Saskatchewan, to the Tramping Lake area, and changed the spelling of the name to Schan.

I have quite a bit of information on the Schaan/Schan family. Contact me directly if you like at schraefel@sk.sympatico.ca.

Chandra
