I recently had the opportunity to examine microfilms of some of the church records of Polsch, the home town of the Kohns family. I discovered a few additional details relevant to the story I posted on 24 Aug 2007. The most important concerns the mother, Gertrude, who died aboard ship during the passage. Her full name was Gertrude Weiler, born about 1813, the daughter of Matthew Weiler and Anna Maria Schaefer. She married Johann Kohns on 26 Jun 1841. They had three children, George Willem, 1 Jan 1839, Anna Maria, 25 Dec 1842 and Johann, 10 Jan 1846. Gertrude was the second wife.
Johann’s first wife and my ggg grandmother was Anna Maria Kohl. Her parents were Todoc (it appears) Kohl and Elizabeth Elzer. She was born around 1812 and married Johann on 21 Feb 1834. Their children were Margaret, 23 Feb 1834, Sophia (my gg grandmother), 23 Jul 1837 and Anna Maria, christened 27 Aug 1840. She died 27 Mar 1841 in Polsch. Johann married Gertrude three months later.
The names of Johann’s parents were: Johann Kohns and Anna Schugard. The spelling is pretty clear from these records. The name appeared to read Schukart in the St. Cecelia record and that was the spelling I used in the previous posting.
