Marcia,
Your theory is convincing. There are some unaccounted-for children in the George Scearce/Nancy Gammon household during the pre-1850's census. But not ones that match up with Thomas Wesley and siblings. "George Bradford Scearce" is a descendent and not an ancestor of this group, and perhaps that's where the mixup observed in other trees occurred.
I have Thomas W as a son of James and his first wife Mary Ritchie.
