Following up to my own message: The english origin of the Scattergood surname is most probably Derbyshire. I have found one variant - Scattergard - 1744 Hannah Scattergard in Derbyshire. Could simply be a spelling variant though. If we consider a Scandinavian origin for Scattergood: * The majority of the settlers in Derbyshire appears to have been Swedish rather than Norvegian (anyone have more information on this?) * I think there is a reasonable chance the 'good' derives from Gard/Gaarde/etc meaning farm As for Scatter? Any old norse speakers out there? The modern Swedish word skatter means tax. Or treasure. Hmm, just when I think I am on the trail of a sun-kissed farm near a lake, I find I am possibly chasing a tax collector. I don't expect we will ever find a link, (possibly genetically?) but my money is on a scandinavian farm. Jill Notify Administrator about this message?
