Hi Scott - thanks for that posting, it made me think a little. My father (a Scattergood) also thought there was a scandinavian origin to the surname. He had heard (from a Norwegian I recall) that there was a word that sounded like 'Skater guard' that he thought meant 'remote farm'. Now he met many people during the second world war, and was involved in the evacuation of Norway, and I wonder if he had this conversation then. Following your message I looked at one or two bits and pieces. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_name#Scandinavia states: 'Denmark and Norway have a very high incidence of names derived from those of farms, many signified by the suffix -gaard -- the modern spelling is gård in Danish and has changed to gard in Norwegian, but as in Sweden, archaic spelling persists in surnames. The most well-known example of this kind of surname is probably Kierkegaard (... farm located by the Church ...)'. There was also the county of Skaraborg - not far from the Norway-Sweden border. I have only once ever come face to face with another Scattergood (apart from my father and sisters) - at a conference in Derbyshire (probably the origin of all things Scattergood). He too had a scandinavian origin theory - that the name originated from two brothers who came over from Scandinavia with the surname. He said he even had the names written down 'somewhere at home'. I'll see if I can dig out an email address for him. Regards Jill Notify Administrator about this message?
