What was the meaning/origin of Scattergood?

So where does Scattergood originate and what does it mean?

Jeffrey asked this in the 'Scattergoods everywhere' thread
and I can't recall seeing any explanation of the meaning of
the surname.

Does it mean someone who scattered goods/possessions -
a bit of a scatterbrain?

Does it mean someone who distributes goodness? Or breaks
up and gets rid of goodness?

My father suggested it might denote a tax collector as 'scot' was an old tax (to get off scot free') and 'agod' was an old english/scottish word for tax collector.

He had also come across a Scandinavian word which sounded like 'Skaeterguard' meaning a farm or smallholding which was well removed from the nearest settlement or civilisation.

Any more theories?

Jill (nee Scattergood)
