Do you have access to census records? There is a George Scarborough in Jackson Co., LA on the property of Irwin (Irvin) Scarborough in 1850 with his sister Martha. I am fairly sure that G.P. is the son of Irvin. A DNA test would verify whether or not descendants of G.P. match the DNA of Major James Scarborough descendants.

1850 Jackson Co., LA
132 132 Irvin Scarborough        49 M Farmer 1600        GA
        Frances               46 F                      GA
        James               21 M                      MS
        Mary M.               17 F                      MS
        Eliza J.               13 F                      MS
        Emily C.               11 F                      MS
        Irvin A.                9 F                      MS
        Jessee F.                7 M                      LA
        John B.                3 M                      MS
136 George               18 M Farmer               MS
        Martha               23 F                      KY

There are only 2 Georges born in this time period and also born in MS.
