Dear David,
I have a very little further information now, which is interesting in light of the fact that you noted down death of Elizabeth wife of Henry Scammell in 1771.
The Henry Scammell who married Ann Anderson in 1773 was a widower. So could they be one and the same Henry Scammell?
I know that there are children of "Henry & Elizabeth" on the baptismal register after 1771 - viz Henry in 1775 and John in 1777, but this may be an error. I know for sure (to my satisfaction) of one other such error at this period amongst the Burley Culls, and it is notable that the vicar soon stopped his experiment with giving mother's name. Also, there is a puzzlingly long gap between the first child recorded to "Henry and Ann" in 1773 and the next in 1779.
Obviously, again, not proven at this point, but it is notable that a John Scammell whose age accords with the baptism of John son of "Henry and Elizabeth" was in 1841 apparently sharing a cottage with my great-great-grandfather John Cull (son of Stephen Cull & Sarah Scammell). If he was actually Sarah's brother this would make more sense.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Marie
