No spelling error. Scammell was a common surname, at least in the New Forest area of Hampshire (not sure how widespread). One book I read suggests it is a form of 'shambles' and so the first Scammells would have been butchers. I have Scammell ancestry - mine came from Burley in the New Forest (gt-gt-gt-grandmother Sarah, daughter of Henry). Can you get any docs (or obituary??) that would give more exact birthplace?
