Hi La Toysa;
I am descended from the white Scaifes of the South Carolina/Virginia area.This is my understanding of how the African-American Scaifes came to be, which would set the date pretty closely;
The Scaifes of South Carolina / Virginia were landowners, and had slaves.When the slaves were freed after the American Civil War, one of the Scaifes, from South Carolina I believe, moved to Arkansas.His former slaves, feeling that they had been relatively well treated (by the standards of the time) took his name when they were freed, and many went with him to Arkansas as employees.
If this is accurate, it would seem to date the emergence of the African-American Scaifes in Arkansas to shortly after the end of the Civil War.That would be around 1870 if my Canadian recollection of American history serves me.
I hope this is useful.I have a book that goes into more detail at home.If you would like me to look up further info, email me.
Regards,
