Hi.
I am looking for any information on my great grandfather, Rev. Joseph Henry Lomax and his family in Saluda
County.
I have located him on the 1900 census in Saluda. At the time he was listed with his wife Mary Pinkney and their four children. My grandmother Clara was 11, her sister Beatrice was 10, brother Joseph Jr. was 8 and sister Lustrena was 6 years. On the census it listed length of marriage 7 years. Thus I am trying to get a handle on the first marriage as well, which, I believe is in Virginia. All a process of elimination I suppose.
As I've called Saluda County Courthouse to try and locate a marriage certificate for Joseph and Mary it was to no avail since the recorded marriages started in 1912.
I still have a problem with the recording of where they were born. I don't believe that the census taker took time to ask where they were born but, assumed they were all born in South Carolina. I believe the family members were born in Virginia. This is another search.
Would anyone have an idea of where I can look and find any type of records on people of color living in Saluda at the time? Information as well, on those churches that were headed by non white pastors in Saluda also. I did call the Saluda Standard Sentinnel Newspaper and left a message trying to find out how far the archives go back.
I have spoken to Dosha Smith at the historical society there and she told me that someone would get back to me and took down the information. Very pleasant lady. I would love to go to the historical society in Saluda but, it would be a little hard since I live in New Jersey.
I thank you for any direction or advice anyone might have and be willing to share.
