The Newton County McCollums have been an enigma for me, so I'd like to see any information you are willing to share. If the 1850 census can be trusted, your James was born about 1790 and did not move to Georgia until after 1834, when his youngest daughter, Mary, was born in SC. In the late 1790s and early 1800s there were several McCollum households in the Old Pendleton District of South Carolina whose heads seem to have descended from Samuel McCollum born about 1741 in New Jersey, or from his brother, Daniel, born about 1744. Daniel moved on to Kentucky in 1795. Perhaps some of his sons remained behind. Samuel stayed in Pendleton and died there about 1800. Both brothers liked the names William, Daniel, James, John and Samuel, eith an occasional David, Stephen and Jacob/Joab thrown into the mix. The result, at least for me, is confusion and frustration because they didn't leave a lot of formal tracks. Anything you can add will certainly be appreciated.
