Thanks for your reply. I have ancestry.com. I'm not clear how to zero in on Orangeburg censuses. I selected 1840 census data, typed in the surname, put Orangeburg county and Orangeburg district. The top hits I got were for Edgefield. That leads me to wonder if any censuses from Orangeburg have been transcribed, or if Orangeburg = Edgefield.

I am looking for the ancestor of Joseph W. Stalnaker, b. 1827, Orangeburg, and died in Autauga, AL bet. 1860 and 1870.
