To my recollection, Oconee County, SC was never named Surry County. There were, however, a lot of settlers around 1780-1800 who traveled to or through Oconee County that were from Surry County, NC. The brother of one of my direct ancestors was from Surry County, NC, and settled in Oconee County, SC for a short time as did many folks who lived around him at that time. You may want to search in NC for your Surry County ancestors. It has its origins around 1760, and they have some pretty old land records that are still intact.
