I am not looking for a professional researcher, but was reading the Oconee queries and found yours. Would you happen to know where "Longnose Mountain" might be? In my family history, I have found that my husband's GG Grandfather, Abram Hays, of Oconee Co., SC, during the Civil War, build a cabin on Longnose Mountain and moved his family there for safety. While he was in the Confederate Service he contacted measles, went to this mountain and stood in the rain guarding his family. The measles turned into pneumonia, he died that night and was carried by wagon down the mountain and was buried at the Old Providence Cemetery (also called the old Hays Cemetery) in the Cross Roads Community near Oakway, Oconee Co., SC. I live in Texas and will never get to visit Oconee County, but was interested in finding out if this mountain really exists.
Thanks for reading this and any advice.
