Debra,

The elder Charles Neal is my 4th Great-Grandfather. I have located him in Newberry District, SC on the 1790 and 1800 Census. He and his wife (others have his wife named Mary) and his son, Charles and a daughter, Mary (who married Francis Marion Beeks both died in Lauens Co., SC.) The son, Charles, married Jemima Davenport, later moved to Giles County, TN. He is buried at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, however when I visited there several years ago, Jemima was not located there. Heard later that she is buried at Bunker Hill, and so far I have not located her, so it must be unmarked. There was a small community of Bunker Hill not far from the Mt. Pisgah area. Charles and sons, Isaac and John, are buried beside each other in old above ground concrete graves.

My granddad told me family stories before his death, he would say that his granddad, Wiley Neal, son of Charles & Jemima talked with an Irish brogue. I was told they came from Ireland, however haven't located the passenger list, due to the name changing from O'Neal/O'Neil/O'Neill. I was also told there is some Scottish as well, so I have been researching at the Northern part of Ireland, close to Scotland and found nothing.

I have been to Newberry in past years doing research, and didn't locate Charles or wife Mary. Charles died by the 1810 Census and I don't know what happened to Mary. I do not have John Kelly's parents listed and John died the year after Amy (I have her name listed as Ann, and both died in Newberry, SC. I located the 1800 Census of Newberry again, and saw a Benjamin Neal who showed to be 45+ as the elder Charles. This could be his brother or possibly dad. So far I have no other siblings linked with the elder Charles, or parents, which would really help. I have been at this for over ten years, and still haven't located much for the elder Charles, due to the name change.

My granddad said that one of the granddad's got upset with one of his brothers and dropped the "O." Others places said the Irish imigrants dropped the "O" to be safe after coming to America. Another distant cousin seems the name was McNeal/McNeill, however my granddad only mentioned the "O".

Charles & Jemina's son Matthias Neal went to TX and settled around Blossom, which is close to Paris in Lamar Co. and died in 1869. Wiley died in Apr 1850 in Giles County, TN, and haven't located him either. He was married to Nancy Goggins, daughter of William A. Goggins. My Great-Granddad Wiley Washington Neal, 1833-1919, was a doctor in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County, TN, before following his Uncle Matthias to TX and settling in Rockwall County, TX, and building a beautiful two story house identical to his Uncle Matthias. I have been in the drug store which is located on the Lawrenceburg town square, where the doctor's office was above, where he practiced medicine with two of his sons, Paul & W. H.

Dr. W.W.'s first wife died and is buried at West Point, just outside of Lawrenceburg. Later he married Amanda Sowell, daughter of Joseph M. Sowell. Amanda's nephew, Ingram Cecil Sowell, was a Rear Admiral in the Navy, and was one of the officers on board the USS Missouri during the Japaneese signing which ended WW II. He and his wife are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, where I was able to visit several years ago.

After Dr. W. W. retired, he and Amanda moved to Sulphur, Murray County, OK, where they are both buried. Wish I could help fill in more blanks, however I also seem to be at a stand still.

I am accustomed to most of the names on the wills, however I have never seen anything about a Turley Neal.

Sue
