1774, June 7th, James Coats is granted 200 acres, Wrightsboro Township, St. Paul Parish, Georgia. Recorded in Grant Book I, page 1089 "Bounded partly on the North and partly on the East by John Perkins and Joseph Boggs, partly on the South and partly on the West by Jacob Casten, on all other sides (parts) by vacant land.(Note: St. Paul Parish later becomes Richmond County and Columbia County was formed from a portion of Richmond. The area where the Coats owned land may have later been taken into McDuffie County.)
1774, August 2nd, two other grants are given to Coats family: Henry Coats granted 200 acres in St. Paul Parish on Aug. 2, 1774 and recorded in Grant book M, page 169 and also Nathaniel Coats was granted on the same date 200 acres in same and recorded in Book M, page 171 (right after the Henry Coats grant).
Early Deeds, etc Colummbia Co., GA, pg 13: Deed signed 18 Apr. 1795, recorded 26 Aug. 1796. Thomas Watson and wife Elizabeth, Adms. and heirs Rebukah Watson, Eady Watson (sic-sb Ray), Melly Watson of state of Georgia and county of Columbia and ,John Coats of Newberry, SC signed deed to sell land to John Moates, 200 acres on Germany Creek bounded by lands formerly owned by John Perkins and John Boggs (north & east partially), (partly south and west) bounded by lands formerly Jacob Castle......original plat granted to James Coats by his majesty King George the third on the 7th day of June 1774 and surveyed 19 February 1773 by James McFarland DL. (Eady's last name is Ray in other places on the document and her husband is named as Benjamin Ray. He signed as her husband also).
