There could be more to being "Black Dutch" as it is said to have been applied to Jews, French, Gypsies and other European peoples that were run out of their own countries into the, Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland etc....
There were also some (can't remember which country) peoples that were run into SCOTLAND then run into IRELAND that were eventually called "Black Irish". It appears that the term has become very complicated.
My grandmother said we were "Black Dutch" and since she had coal black hair, black eyes and fair complexion, I ask if that meant we were Indian. She by no uncertain terms said, "No Way".Of course that is something I would have found very interesting but as she came into Oklahoma on a wagon train and probably heard terrible things about the indians, I figure that might explain her feelings. Maybe some of her family were killed, who knows as she is dead now.I have read much on this topic and I don't know if we will ever truly know the true reference. But I'm also sure that many indian peoples trying to survive in the white man's world, did so by covering their true identity.
