Sandra,
I know the birth and death dates and the designation "born in the city of Charleston, SC" from George Williams's grave stone.I've seen it myself in Aliceville, AL.I agree, his family was quite obliging to have carved all of that information there!
My cousin has done a lot of research already, and if he hasn't found a family Bible with the info, then it probably doesn't exist, sadly.
I've been trolling through the wills of various South Carolina counties trying to find some relation.Unfortunately, the court house in Pickens County, AL burned twice before 1871, so it seems that the wills before that (including George's in 1858) were probably destroyed.
One possibility in Charleston I found in a book of abstracts of records from the Charleston Orphan House:
WILLIAMS, GEORGE. Admitted January 13, 1814 aged five years by JANE WILLIAMS, mother. Delivered to his brother-in-law, HENRY CROSS, MAy 24, 1821. Indentures expire January 13, 1830. (G-39) Admitted from the Poor House. ("ROSP," January 15, 1814)
I researched it some, and tracked down the Henry Cross mentioned and the potential sister of George Williams (of appropriate age to be my George), but Henry Cross died in Mar 1826 in Charleston, and I haven't been able to trace them further yet.
So, still looking. Thanks for your help!
Lauren
