Berryman was a common Southern name, they had popular names back then too. But as Thomas Kerwin told you, it's quite likely it was a family name.

Although in 1870 in Barry, Pike, Illinois there was a Berryman Hurt, son of Elisha Hurt of SC, I'm thinking that your Berryman Hurt might be named after a grandfather
