Walter E. Poole from SC (1899) - merchant seaman?
I have reached a brick wall on my research of my grandfather, Walter Eugene Poole. He supposedly was born in South Carolina on 29 Mar 1899. He never had a social security number. I was told that his mother's name was Mary, and his father's name was John, but his death certificate said his father's name was Walter (possibly confused) and mother's name was "unknown". "John" and "Mary" makes sense, since his first born son was Johnny, and first born daughter was Mary. He married Lucile Gould, presumably in Mobile, Alabama, although I haven't found that record yet either. The first son, Johnny, was born in Mobile around 1927. They left Mobile just prior to the 1940 census and disappeared again for about 15 years, eventually showing up in Texas and Louisiana. He allegedly was with a carnival during that time.
Prior to getting together with my grandmother, he was alleged to have been a merchant seaman. If anyone has any information on my grandfather, his parents, or how to research information on merchant seaman/marines (since they were not considered a military organization), please let me know. Thank you.
