Emily, I don't see any connection to South Carolina with these folks.

Peyton, Malachi, James, and Clarissa, all born in Wilkes Co., NC, were children of Henry Hardy Lawrence. Henry Hardy was born 1771 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and died 8 April 1855 in Chattooga Co., GA. This information was found on Rootsweb's WorldConnect site.

I suspect Peyton was the administrator of his father's estate, given the date of the distribution of the slaves in 1856. Ned must have taken the surname of his owner, Clarissa Stamper.

It is possible that your Ned was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA since Henry Hardy Lawrence was born there, and then apparently moved to NC and on to GA.

Hope this helps.
Sandra
