My g-g-g grandfather, WILLIAM MARTIN, participated in establishing the second settlement of Dyer Co, TN in 1821-22 with George Davis, Willis Chamberlain, and Jerry (Jeremiah) Pierce according to the chapter on Dyer Co in Goodspeed's "History of TN." An 1876 Nashville newspaper published an article describing the donation of two of his artifacts to the TN Historical Society by William Martin's two daughters, Elizabeth and Martha Jane. The May 1876 minutes of the TN Historical Society describe the donation which is probably more reliable than the newspaper article which had two glaring errors about the family relationships. The newspaper article states that William Martin was born in 1793 in Davidson Co, TN. I have a letter written 17 Apr 1876 by William Martin's daughter, Elizabeth, to her brother (William Martin's son), Thomas William Martin, asking her brother to "find out" where "father was born, South Carolina or middle Tenn." Apparently William Martin's two daughter were unsure of where their father was born. William Martin died in 1857, nineteen years before the donation to the TN Historical Society. So the accuracy of the 1876 Nashville newspaper article is in question. Another document passed down in my family lists the parents of William Martin: "JAMES MARTIN, and wife WINNIE" Is there anyone in SOUTH CAROLINA who might find a familiar "ring" to this brief biography? I am seeking information about William Martin's parents, James and Winnie Martin and to establish the correct location of William Martin's birth. Notify Administrator about this message?
