Old Granby Trading Post Ledger Book Found
Posted by: John Howell (ID *****6409) Date: December 14, 2011 at 10:24:47

Around 1765 James Chestnut and Joseph Kershaw of Fredericksburg (now Camden) decided to open a combination trading post and warehouse on the Congarees at Granby. They needed a holding place for goods being shipped to and from Charleston while providing a trading post for the settlers.

Recently a ledger book from this trading post has been obtained by the Cayce Museum. Entries are from the 1770s and include Gen. Wade Hampton and other recognizable names. This ledger book is in the process now of being photographed and placed into a binder so interested people can view this historical document.
