McDaniels of Talbot Co, MD & McDonalds of Augusta Co., VA ca. 1760
There is a McDaniel family of New Castle Co., DE whose progenitor was a Bryan McDonald (1645-1707); his grandson, Joseph McDonald (1722-1809), m. 1754 Elizabeth Ogle and was in Augusta Co., VA by 1763, possibly earlier.
There are three Jacobite brothers: Angus, John, and Daniel McDaniel who were in Talbot Co., MD in 1747, having been sent there as prisoners of the Battle of Culloden. Angus McDaniel was in Augusta Co., VA by 1758 when his son John was born in November of that year. These three brothers were later in South Carolina, Angus and John in Edgefield and Chester Cos., SC respectively, and Daniel in Orangeburg Dist., SC. I believe that my ancestress, Mary "Polly" McDaniel, b. ca. 1760 is possibly a daughter of one of these men.
Mary m. James Tate ca. 1782 York Co., SC A John McDaniel along with James Tate applied for letters of administration for the estate of Thomas Tate, the father of James Tate, in York Co., SC 1785; later in 1807 and 1825 an Elizabeth McDaniel is a witness to two deeds concerning Mary McDaniel Tate and her brother Joseph Tate of Fairfield Co., SC. I believe that this John McDaniel and Elizabeth McDaniel are probably the parents of Mary "Polly" McDaniel Tate. There are also records in Jefferson Co., AL ca, 1837 which connect James Tate, Jr. to the family of John McDaniel/McDanal, the Jacobite. Both James amd Mary McDaniel Tate d. Union Co., SC 1842 and 1844 respectively.
What I can't explain is why James and Mary McDaniel Tate of Union C., SC would name a son John Ogle Tate which would seem to tie Mary McDaniel Tate to the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Ogle McDonald of Augusta Co., VA. A grandson was named John Ogle Tate as well, so the name obviously meant something to this family. Unfortunately Joseph McDonald of Augusta Co., VA did not have a daughter Mary.
It is interesting that the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Ogle McDonald and the family of Angus McDaniel/McDonald (probably with his brothers John and Daniel as well) were in Augusta Co., VA at the same time, and that one of the Jacobite brothers would later have a daughter who would name a son Ogle seemingly indicating a tie to the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Ogle McDonald. Is anyone aware of a connection between these two families?
