The Ferguson family is mentioned in “Captain Bill, Book Three, A genealogy of the Catawba River Valley of South Carolina, Chester-York-Lancaster Counties, Edwards Culp McFadden [families]”, 1990, by Robert J. Stevens. This book is available at http://www.rootsweb.com/~scchest2/scchesterinfo.htmlhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~scchest2/scchesterinfo.html
There is also some information about Samuel and Sarah (Ferguson) Neely on page 155 of “Early Records of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church, Chester County, South Carolina, 1799-1859”, 1980, by Brent H. Holcomb and Elmer O. Parker.

He may be the James Ferguson who was hung for horse stealing by a group of Regulators in the 1760's somewhere in upper SC.This is accepted by many, but unproven.
