I don't know of Long Cane Mills, but perhaps your ancestor resided in the settlements at "Long Cane Creek" in NE SC near Abbeville located within old "96 District". The area was settled by the 1760's and came under attack by Cherokee Indians in 1760-1763 (the Long Cane Creek Massacre). There is a WEB site devoted to the Long Cane Creek history and genealogy at the URL below. I noticed one researcher lists Abney as family being studied. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lynneb/index.htmlhttp://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lynneb/index.html
Mills Atlas of South Carolina (mapped 1825) shows Long Cane Creek in Abbeville County in 1820. Its a tributary of Little River which flows into the Savannah River at the SW corner of the county. The old settlements are part of present-day Sumter National Forest in Abbeville, McCormick, and Greenwood counties, SC. Also, just alittle south in Edgefield County (mapped 1817), Mills Atlas shows an "M Abney" placename shown near the Saluda River along the eastern border of the county. Both of these counties were formed from 96 District.
Good luck.
