EMMA ELIZA YOUNG (JAMES) 1819-1863 SC to AL
I am searching for the parents of Emma Eliza Young, born May 6, 1819/ May 14, 1820 in South Carolina.Based on the scant evidence I have accumulated over the years, I believe that she may have connections to one ofthe Young families of Laurens, South Carolina.Somehow the widowed Emma Eliza and her two children ended up in Alabama, where she married my great-great grandfather, L.B. Vasser, a planter from Pleasant Hill.
I am also looking for SC links to any of the Young families of the Dallas/Lowndes area in Alabama, since it seems rather unusual for a widow to relocate to another state unless there were family ties established there.
Her first marriage was to John Stobo James on Nov 25, 1836 (his second wife). John Stobo James was the son of Benjamin James, a South Carolina senator, and Jane Stobo James.
Benjamin James, originally from Stafford, VA practiced law in Laurens and the James family evidently retained strong ties to the area for several generations.Since John Stobo James is found in the 1830 and 1840 Laurens, Laurens District, South Carolina census, I am assuming that Emma Eliza Young and John Stobo James also married in Laurens. Also, because Emma Eliza was only sixteen or so at the time of the marriage, I am assuming that she came from the Laurens area. John Stobo James styled himself "Esq." in both the 1830 and 1840 census, which suggests that he may also have been a lawyer.
Between 1840 and 1850, Emma Eliza and John Stobo James moved to Columbia, South Carolina. They had two children, Jane Stobo James born Nov 11, 1844andBelton O'Neall JamesFeb 19, 1848. After John Stobo James’ death in 1851, Emma Eliza and her two children moved to Dallas County, Alabama (Pleasant Hill area). She married Major Littleberry (L.B.)Vasser December 23, 1853 in Selma, Alabama. Emma Eliza had two children with L.B. Vasser, Flora Aurelia born May 13, 1855 and Harris Walker Vasser born in 1859.Emma Eliza died in Dallas County on November 13, 1864 and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Any and all information would be appreciated.
